training
All chapter members MUST complete MSP (Member Success Program) Training. This training MUST be completed within sixty (60) days of your membership beginning. Additionally, if you do not complete MSP, you can be placed on probation which can result in your category being opened.
MSP is an important 3 hour course offered at several convenient locations and times. Attendance at an MSP session provides you with valuable tools in learning how to shape your 10 minute presentation as well as polish up your 30 second commercial. Additionally, you will learn some very important information about what is a GOOD, QUALIFIED referral and what is not.
In addition to MSP session offerings, there are also advanced in-depth training classes as well as training classes for incoming leadership teams.
Please visit the Michigan BNI web site where you can review the dates and times for all of the above training sessions/classes and register online. These training sessions are very useful in helping you to become a good BNI member which will benefit you and your fellow members.

definitions
Ever wonder what all those phrases are that are thrown around at meetings? How 'bout wondering just what the Leadership Team does? What's a visitor host and why have one? Now's your chance to learn all about it!
10 MINUTE
A 10 minute, as it's commonly referred to, is a 10 Minute Presentation.. This is your opportunity to take 10 minutes and do nothing but talk about your business! A 10 minute presentation can be scheduled by any member who has completed MSP training. You must have completed MSP in order to do a 10 Minute Presentation.
You can bring props/presentation material;, pretty much anything that will help you present your business to your fellow members. A 10 minute takes place during every meeting and it really is a great way to educate your member salesforce.
30 SECOND
A 30 second is 30 seconds time you're given to introduce yourself, your company, your memory hook and your ask for the week. Done at every meeting, it works well to reinforce who you, what you do and what would be a good referral for you that week.
ALL THOSE LITTLE SLIPS!
Referral Slips are three-part with a white, pink and yellow copy. Referall slips should be filled out as completely and legibly as possbile. The white copy goes to the member you are passing the referral to. The pink copy goes in the basket and the yellow copy you keep for follow up. The yellow part also can represent a lead versus a referral in which case the yellow copy goes in the basket and you keep the pink one. The white copy, if used for a lead, should be clearly marked as a lead.
One-To-One slips are completed AFTER a One-To-One has taken place and is filled out by the person who requested/scheduled the One-To-One. One-To-One slips are also placed in the basket.
Thank You slips are completed to thank a member who referred business to you and you closed the business (i.e. got paid!). The member who got paid is the one who completes the Thank You slip to acknowledge the member who passed him the closed business. These slips go in the basket as well.
All of these slips are critical to the chapter. These are used to track referrals, one-to-one meetings and closed business, are also used to determine Notable Networkers, They are also the best way for a chapter to track its success as well as identify members who may not be contributing as much as they could. Help can be offered to those members to assist them in becoming vital members of the chapter. Often, a member only needs a little help or encouragement!
ATTENDANCE
Attendance at weekly chapter meetings is CRITICAL to your BNI membership. Each member is allowed three (3) absences without a sub every six (6) months (April through September and October through March). If a member is absent more than three times during these six month terms, their classification can be opened and their membership is put in danger. It is extremely important that attendance policies be adhered to - if you are not there to represent yourself, who will?
BNI MEMBER
A BNI member is the individual, not the business. While the primary goal of BNI is to network, refer and build your business, it is the individual BNI member who is important. The BNI member is not a business or corporation, it is YOU, personally. The individual member is the one builds the relationships and trust with other members.
EDUCATIONAL COORDINATOR
The Educational Coordinator has five minutes at each meeting to educate chapter members on various topics of interest to members. Sometimes, he/she will talk about things that chapte members may need clarification on.
EVENTS COORDINATOR
The Event Coordinator is responsible for organizing and coordinating chapter events outside of the regular weekly meetings. He/she is responsible for planning for the annual Visitor's Day event, holiday parties and other like events.
LEADERSHIP TEAM
The Leadership Team is comprised of three chapter members - a President, Vice President and SecretaryTreasurer.
The President is responsible for running each week's meeting, following the BNI agenda for the meeting and making sure the meeting starts on time and ends on time.
The VP runs the chapter, keeping track of attendance, running membership committee meetings, tracking referrals and closed business and giving out the notable networker awards.
The Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for taking care of the chapter's finances, such as room dues and membership dues. The secretary/treasurer also introduces each week's 10 minute presenter.
Leadership Teams serve for a period of six (6) months. Near the end of the current term, the current President selects the next incoming President who, in turn, selects his/her Vice President.
The incoming President also selects the Visitor Hosts and Events Coordinator who also serve for 6 months.
The Vice President then selects the Membership Committee members.
All Leadership Team members must take BNI Leadership Training, be interviewed by the chapter's Director and be members in good standing before filling their respective position on the team.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
The Membership Committee is made up of up to four chapter members. The Vice President oversees the membership committee and runs membership committee meetings. This group votes on member issues such as admission into the chapter, if a classification should be opened and any disputes within the chapter.
MEMORY HOOK
A Memory Hook is most normally a short phrase that will help someone easily recall/remember your business and what your business does or offers.
You may not realize it, but you've been surrounded by memoy hooks probably most of your life. "Where's the Beef?", "I'm Lovin' It", "It's The Real Thing". Bits and pieces of phrases that stay with you for years.
The key part of memory hook is, of course, memory. If you want it to work, it needs to be memorable.
There are many good resources online to help you discover your memory hook as well as the valuable information about memory hooks provided during MSP training.
MENTOR
A Mentor is a chapter member, ideally a sponsoring chapter member, who elects to spend 3-4 weeks with a new member helping them learn about the chapter, rules and guidelines and processes occuring during the meeting.
MSP
MSP stands for Member Success Program. The member success program is designed to help YOU get the most out of your membership and become a valuable member of our chapter. MSP training programs are offered by the State level of BNI and are REQUIRED training within the first 60 days of your membership. Classes are 3 hours in length and are offered at various locations convenient to chapter members. When you completed and signed your application you agreed to attend this important training within the required 60 days. This policy is also stated in the BNI brochure each member receive at induction.
ONE-TO-ONE
A One-To-One is your best opportunity to obtain an in-depth education about a fellow member's business so you can be a better salesperson for them. Being in a BNI chapter is all about being a sales force for all members in the group because the more you know about their business, the better you can refer business to them. Make sense, doesn't it?
All you have to do is ask! Just ask any member you would like to get to know better professionally for some time to meet with them outside of the meeting. Most one-to-one's can take place over an early breakfast right after a meeting or at any time or place convienent to both parties. Be sure to complete and bring your one-to-one planner filled out to give to your one-to-one partner; it's a valuable tool!
SUB
A sub can attend a meeting on your behalf on occasion. While it is encouraged that you find a sub if you cannot make a meeting now and then, continuous or frequent subbing is NOT encouraged. Again, you are the best representative for your business.
A sub cannot be a member in your own chapter nor should it be a member in another BNI chapter. Ideally, a sub should be someone who knows your business well (an employee, spouse, family member) who can present it in the best light possible. It is your sole responsiblity to find a sub if you are unable to attend a meeting.
VISITOR HOSTS
The Visitor Hosts should arrive 15 minutes before the meeting begins and they are responsible for greeting all visitors and making sure they are introduced to the President and Vice President. It is their job to make visitors feel welcome and comfortable. They also are responsible for assisting visitors after the meeting by answering any questions and/or helping visitors who want to join through the application process.
VISITORS DAY
Normally held once a year in the spring, Visitor's Day is held at off-meeting premises and is an excellent opportunity to help the chapter grow by issuing invitations to local business owners to join a chapter. A presentation is given by the chapter's director and all members are required to attend. It offers a great opportunity to network with local businesspersons and encourage them to join the NUMBER ONE business-to-business referral network in the world.

sub
If you need a sub, it is your responsiblity to find one. Please remember, another member in your chapter cannot sub for you!
A good sub would, ideally, be someone who works with you in your business or an employee, spouse, family member, friend - someone who knows your business well and would be a good representative for your company.
